Bono To Become Richest Musician On The Planet

Comments off

U2 frontman Bono is in line to become the richest musician on the planet after a stock market floatation.

At one point in time, U2 were regarded as a vaguely credible, post-punk outfit. Martin Hannett stepped in to produce their debut single, while by the time the Irish band’s second album came around they had joined an obscure Christian sect.

How times have changed. Fresh from sinking enormous amounts of cash into a Spiderman musical, Bono’s Facebook investments are set to turn him into the wealthiest musician on the planet.

Keeping a close eye on his financial affairs, Bono purchased a 2.3% stake in Facebook through the private equity firm Elevation Partners.

Facebook was floated on the stock market earlier today (May 18th) and – if financial predictions are anything to go by – Bono could be in line to earn a fortune. Given that the company is valued at over $100billion (£63 billion) the singer should be set to pocket around $1.5 billion (£940 million).

Added to his current wealth, this should mean that Bono will surpass Sir Paul McCartney and become the planet’s wealthiest musician.

Fifty Outsiders : 41 – 50

Comments off

The final part of Kris Needs Fifty Outiders list for Clash magazine’s Outsider issue includes such musicians as Mark Stewart, Daniel Johnston, Underground Resistance, MF Doom and more.

41. MARK STEWART

Emerging from punk?s maelstrom fronting the fearsome Pop Group, Mark Stewart charted an idiosyncratic collison course with hip-hop, funk and dub reggaes; one of the most volcanic but subversive creative minds this country has produced.

42. JEFFREY LEE PIERCE

After screaming into the Eighties with his Gun Club, Pierce blazed a kamikaze trail of incendiary gigs, epoch-making albums and hell-raising behaviour, claiming his life when he died of a brain haemorrhage in 1996.

43. PRIMAL SCREAM

Few other bands have so doggedly followed their musical passions, rock ?n? roll fantasies and punk principles as defiantly, and often controversially. The last gang in town who turned outsider status into a fine art.

44. ANDREW WEATHERALL

Repeatedly lauded for his Primals connections, Weatherall is that rare beast that can deliver the ultimate knockout house music DJ set, while relishing boosting Suicide rockabilly mantras in decaying East London pubs.

45. DANIEL JOHNSTON

The manic depressive schizophrenic singer-songwriter found his mental health deteriorating while recording his debut album ?1990? (released that year). On more of an even keel this century, feted by the likes of Tom Waits, Matt Groening and Henry Rollins.

46. UNDERGROUND RESISTANCE

During the 1990s, the most mysterious and uncompromising Detroit techno missives emanated from a deeply-underground bunker manned by ?Mad? Mike Banks, Jeff Mills, Robert Hood and cohorts, firing out ?electronic battle weapons? which subverted techno in militaristic anonymity.

47. BASIC CHANNEL

Few electronic operations carried deeper mystique in the Nineties than Berlin?s Basic Channel, launched in 1993 by Moritz Von Oswald and Mark Ernestus, releasing nine twelve-inch singles which shaped a new ultra-minimal dub techno template.

48. PETE DOHERTY

Initially appearing with Carl Barat in the 21st century?s first (potentially) great songwriting duo, Doherty?s spent the last few years ducking and diving as lone Johnny Thunders-style journeyman, playing to the faithful and teenage newcomers having their first dabble in wild side romance.

49. MF DOOM

After becoming a victim of the cut-throat rap industry as a member of K.M.D., Daniel Dumille was homeless on New York?s streets until reappearing in 1999 as the permanently masked MF Doom, based on the Marvel comics villain, introducing a new style of badder boy.

50. METAMONO

Can collaborator Jono ?Kumo? Podmore, Paul Conboy and Mark Hill eschew sampling, overdubbing and digital polish in favour of the analogue machines which electronic music was built on, bringing back electronica?s crusading spirit and vital edge.

Today’s Coyotes Are Super-Coyotes

Comments off

?We need to stop looking at these animals as static entities. They’re evolving.”
?Roland Kays, a mammalogist at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh, reminds us that the coyotes that have been exploding in population across the Northeastern United States of late, spreading as deeply into urban areas as Central Park, are not your great-great-grandmother’s coyotes. These are a coyote-wolf hybrid, 50 percent larger than the coyotes of yore, highly adaptable and well able to hunt and take down animals as large as deer. They’re getting bigger and faster and stronger and smarter. And they are coming for you. Joni Mitchell never lies.

May’s best music from across the MAP

Listen to 34 new tracks from around the world, as chosen by the Guardian and other bloggers in the Music Alliance Pact

Click the play button to listen to individual songs, right click on the song title to download an MP3, or grab a zip file of the whole 34-track compilation through Ge.tt here.

ARGENTINA: Zonaindie
Prietto Viaja Al Cosmos Con MarianoEy, Esa No Es Forma De Decir Adiós

PVACCM is a psychedelic rock duo (Mariano, drums and vocals; Prietto, guitar and vocals) from Buenos Aires. Their first recordings were kind of lo-fi experiments but in the past couple of years they’ve developed a unique sound with melodies and lyrics that grow on you in a melancholic way. This track is their rendition of Leonard Cohen’s classic tune Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye and features on their last album, a 28-song double record that you can purchase from Bandcamp.

AUSTRIA: Walzerkönig
Mile Me DeafWild At Heart

Mile Me Deaf is one of the other bands Killed By 9V Batteries’ Wolfgang Möstl plays in. And although side-projects – such an unfair name for a 500+ songs oeuvre – are usually a space for weird shit your band mates didn’t agree to, their first album Eat Skull, and especially the first single Wild At Heart, is surprisingly free of noise and distortion. Instead, it creates the last-day-of-summer-holidays feeling you know from Girls and Beach House.

BRAZIL: Meio Desligado
Leonardo MarquesLinha Do Trem

Nostalgic melodies are the hallmark of Dia e Noite No Mesmo Céu, the debut album of Leonardo Marques. His songs recall a bucolic scenery, romantic and lonely, as we can hear on Linha Do Trem. Leonardo recorded all instruments on his solo work (except drums) in a homely, intimate setting. His music is likely to appeal to fans of Elliott Smith, Clube Da Esquina and Jon Brion.

CANADA: Quick Before It Melts
The RestAlways On My Mind

The story of The Rest’s new album, SEESAW, will be one of legend. First, their dear friend and producer Dan Achen passed away suddenly just as they started recording. Then, a month away from finishing the record, a hard-drive glitch deleted everything they’d done so far. It took a black box recovery team six months to retrieve it. Now, more than a year later, it’s here. And it’s stunning. The beautifully hazy Always On My Mind just hints at SEESAW’s orchestral brilliance.

CHILE: Super 45
Daniel KlauserSimply Swag

If we had to put all our money on one name from the Chilean dance scene, it would definitively be Daniel Klauser. The young producer skillfully brings together elements from 90s house, ghetto-style hip hop and tribal music, and has so far gathered a considerable amount of positive reviews from local and international media. This track open his Simply Swag EP, which you can download for free from Diamante Records.

CHINA: Wooozy
SnaplineSustaining

Beijing-based trio Snapline just released their second album Phenomena through Maybe Mars Records. Their music puts a contemporary Beijing spin on the sounds and ideas produced by the noise and minimalist musicians of the 70s and 80s, especially focusing on the New York scene of that period. They also explore the dark, industrial music coming out of England during that period, especially from bands such as Joy Division and The Cure.

COLOMBIA: El Parlante Amarillo
Like Some Cat From JapanJohnny Ramone

Like Some Cat From Japan (LSCFJ) take their name from a line in one of David Bowie’s masterpieces, Ziggy Stardust. This electro group from Bogotá have a dance-punk sound that is perfect for the sweaty throng of a nightclub and dancing from dark until dawn.

DENMARK: All Scandinavian
SLOWOLFSee U In My Dreams

This summer Andreas Asingh, one third of lauded electro-pop outfit SMALL, will release his debut as SLOWOLF. Not much is known about the project but he says that black metal, hip hop and dream pop will unite, perhaps for the first time, on the album which will also feature a chorus written by a seven-year-old boy and Raekwon of the Wu-Tang Clan. Here’s the excellent first single See U In My Dreams, a Music Alliance Pact exclusive download.

ENGLAND: The Guardian Music Blog
Sarah YoungAjambo Si

Sarah Young, noted the Guardian’s New Band of the Day writer, is the queen of moombahton, the genre that fuses Dutch house and reggaeton, soca and dancehall. If anyone is going to cross over and “do a Katy B”, as such a manoeuvre is becoming known, it’s this 22-year-old graduate of the Academy of Contemporary Music turned DJ, producer and all-round moom-bassador. Ajambo Si, the opening track on her new EP, features Lioness and Slick Don and is based on a kuduro rhythm, but to the NBotD writer it sounded “like dubstep meets dancehall or Caribbean grime, like Dizzee if he went to St Lucia on holiday and never came back”.

FINLAND: Glue
All Will Be QuietThe First Day Pt. 2

Post-rock band All Will Be Quiet releases its debut album On The First Day this month. It is a concept record about the collapse and rebirth of society with an optimistic view on the how the future will be for mankind. Equally ambitious is The First Day Pt. 2, a grandiose and cinematic instrumental song that opens the second part of the album.

FRANCE: Yet You’re Fired
BirkiiHoly War

Birkii brought us the joyful pop song Shade Of Doubt last year on the great Kitsuné Parisien compilation, and then appeared in many mixes and playlists, including Edwin van Cleef’s April mixtape. Now she’s back with Holy War, a catchy synth-pop song from Kitsuné Parisien II that will also be on her debut EP out on June 4, with remixes from Equateur, Pol Rax, Pegase (last month’s MAP artist) and Zemaria.

GERMANY: Blogpartei
Christian LoefflerEleven (feat. Mohna)

There are many subtle things in Christian Loeffler’s debut A Forest which make his music very contemporary – there is swishing, there is rustling, there is clacking, there is tinging. In the pleasantly moody track Eleven, Mohna, singer of former MAP band Me Succeeds, adds another level to Loeffler’s calm but vivid opus.

ICELAND: Rjóminn
The Lovely LionInto The Forest

Representing the new wave of Icelandic folk-pop revival, The Lovely Lion are ones to watch for the future. Though this young and extremely talented band have only recorded a handful of songs and are still unsigned, their unique approach to songwriting and polished sound is sure to grab the attention of music lovers everywhere.

INDONESIA: Deathrockstar
AASBonaparte

Raw, lo-fi, angry dark punk from Medan with added passion about world history which leads us to a song about Napoleon Bonaparte.

IRELAND: Nialler9
Not SquaresFall Far

Northern Irish electro punks Not Squares have ditched the ultra high-energy in favour of a more restrained dancefloor synth-pop sound for their new single. While Fall Far’s new direction can be compared to the kind of stuff coming out on the Kitsuné label, it must be said that this is a very good look and a surprising one for the band. The best Irish song released in April bar none.

ITALY: Polaroid
The MojomaticsYou Are The Reason For My Trouble

You Are The Reason For My Trouble is the fourth album by The Mojomatics, one the best and coolest garage rock bands around Italy and Europe. The duo from Venice brings into their sound echoes of Rolling Stones, Kinks and Dylan, but what I deeply love about their songs and concerts is their tireless energy.

JAPAN: Make Believe Melodies
WallflowerCure Your Heart

Indie-pop music never left Japan, as bands trying to sound twee have been popping up since the C86 tape dropped. Yet this year has seen a boom in jangly rock groups, with Osaka outfit Wallflower being one of the catchiest. They take cues from The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart and even opened for that American band when they came to Japan earlier this year. This song shows they learned well from The Pains, as they nail dreamy indie-pop yearning in just over three minutes.

MALTA: Stagedive Malta
Stolen CreepThrow Your Heart To The Sea

Stolen Creep is the brainchild of childhood friends Marie Borg Alden (guitars, vocals) and Rebecca Theuma (drums). The band has had many different members, recently settling into the current line-up of Marie, Rebecca and Katryna Storace (guitars, vocals). Following a busy year of writing, rewriting and rehearsals, they chose their favourite songs and retreated to record their first EP, Throw Your Heart To The Sea.

MEXICO: Red Bull Panamérika
Andy MountainsHoy Me Gusta Mi Peinado

The title of this song, translated into English, is “Today, I Like My Hair”. With the naive viewpoint of early college students, this Mexico City quintet portrait everyday existential nuances with an optimism only an iPod advertisement would reach. But don’t classify Andy Mountains as cheap, feelgood jingle-makers. Their sound thrives in high-brow references that go from Animal Collective to the minimalism of La Monte Young. Give this tune a try and have a good hair day!

PERU: SoTB
AudioleySame Old

Audioley is a new project by Francois Peglau and Jules Drade, two Peruvian musicians based in London. Audioley started as an experiment, with the duo meeting one night every week to make a song a day. First single Same Old is feelgood electronic pop and comes with a curious and funny video.

PORTUGAL: Posso Ouvir Um Disco?
T(h)reeStarlight

T(h)ree was featured in MAP in February 2011. T(h)ree is not a band but a project which brings together musicians/bands from Portugal and, for this second volume, Philippines and Singapore. In the featured track, we have Stealing Orchestra (Portugal), Maze (Portugal) and The Analog Girl (Singapore) playing together.

PUERTO RICO: Puerto Rico Indie
Harry RagTiny Painting

Harry Rag is the solo project of Kristian Prieto (Coleco, Alegría Rampante), who wanted to figure out just how many sounds and moods he could generate with his acoustic guitar. Prieto has released seven ‘web albums’ under the Harry Rag name, all recorded in his bedroom straight to a four-track, each one expanding on his guitar experiments and polishing up his sound. Tiny Painting is a great recent example of his prowess as a young musician and is taken from his latest album, The Ghastly Adventures Of Ghost Goat.

ROMANIA: Babylon Noise
JazzadezzFairy

Jazzadezz is a dream pop/new wave band formed by Alin Zabrauteanu (synths, guitar, production) and Dezdemona Mihaescu (vocals). For their 2010 debut album Inimani Mal, Calin Torsan (Domnisoara Pogany and NU & Apa Neagr?) joined the band playing clarinet, recorder and caval. In 2012, another two members were added, Alex Stanciu on guitar (also in Domnisoara Pogany) and drummer Eduard Gabia, a renowned choreographer and contemporary artist. The second album, Panta Rhei, was released last month and experiments in new areas such as ambient, post-rock and trip-hop.

RUSSIA: Big Echo
2muchachosStriwi Kri4at

Striwi Kri4at is a beautiful instrumental piece from romantic dream pop band 2muchachos, who released their Vesnywki!! EP last month, a perfect soundtrack for spring.

SCOTLAND: The Pop Cop
Julia And The DoogansDown The Line

Julia Doogan has everything you’d want from a pop singer – a genuinely distinguishable voice, a breakable heart, just the right amount of melancholy, and lyrics that are honest but not mushy. MAP exclusive free download Down The Line is taken from Julia And The Doogans’ achingly graceful new five-track Diamonds EP (buy on Bandcamp), and shows off the talents of Julia and her lush band to near perfection.

SINGAPORE: I’m Waking Up To…
Sze KiatOnce In A While

No man is an island, yet one gets the sense that the musical ideas that transpire in Sze Kiat’s mind were born from the stillness of time. There’s an unhurried approach to his songwriting and an intimacy that evokes a strain that could only come from a sort of crying out from some terrifying or forsaken place. Featuring traditional Chinese stringed instruments such as the erhu and the zhongruan, the sparse instrumentation serves as the background to Sze Kiat’s simple yet emotive lyrics.

SOUTH AFRICA: Musical Mover & Shaker!
Nate MaingardThe Open Space

Nate Maingard is an indie-folk singer-songwriter from Cape Town whose music often brings the likes of Damien Rice, Coldplay and Jack Johnson to mind. His voice has been compared to Thom Yorke and Ben Gibbard, and his easy style and sense of melody shine through on The Open Space with a passionate undertone throughout.

SOUTH KOREA: Korean Indie
E9My Little Flutter

E9, short for Edward Nine, wish to combine the pureness of Edward Scissorhands with the rampage of Nine Inch Nails. Their sound is influenced by groups like Placebo and Muse, while their lyrics tell fairy tales. The band has been around for several years and are preparing to release their first EP. My Little Flutter is a perfect sample of E9′s mixture of grunge, punk and Britpop with electronic sounds.

SPAIN: Musikorner
BorealsLuciérnagas

Boreals are probably younger than any of you beloved MAP readers but that doesn’t mean they don’t know what they’re doing. And what they do is deliver a fine mixture of cosmic post-rock (clearly influenced by Explosions In The Sky) embellished with clouds of synths that makes their sound epic and heart-touching, just as post-rock should. Luciérnagas, one of their most atmospheric tracks, is taken from their second EP, Grecia, released through Barcelona-based label Irregular, home of former MAP acts Lasers and The Suicide Of Western Culture.

SWEDEN: Swedesplease
SkatanControl

The new record from Skatan is out on May 23 and is called Seven Trees. The first single, Control, features a little more eclectic instrumentation than in the past and Simone Andersson Wingfors’ voice is less processed and more immediate, resulting in a song that hits all the right chords.

SWITZERLAND: 78s
Baba ShrimpsAngel

This five-piece from Zurich play impulsive pop music with a blend of country and rock. Baba Shrimps will release a new record at the end of 2012, but to shorten the waiting time they have dropped a live version of a new, unreleased song called Angel.

TURKEY: WEARTBEAT
SolardipLeap Of Faith

With their French electro/indie-influenced sound, Solardip is one of the few live acts of their genre in the country. In a short time, these three Istanbul youngsters have attracted a big audience. Debut album Future Now came out in March through Remoov Records after the release of the spectacular single and sexy video of Dance Like Wolves.

UNITED STATES: I Guess I’m Floating
Nicole MiglisStay Small

There’s no hiding my affection for Gainesville’s Hundred Waters, one of 2012′s best new bands. Just as bewilderingly complete, elegant and worth exploring is the solo work of their frontwoman, Nicole Miglis. Stay Small is from her debut self-titled EP, which you can download for free here.

VENEZUELA: Música y Más
Ulises HadjisDonde Va

Ulises Hadjis is a young artist from Maracaibo. Despite his fledgling career, he already has two albums and a Latin Grammy as a music producer to his name. His second record, Cosas Perdidas, was released last month. In his own words, it is “an honest collection of songs” and shows more maturity in his lyrics and compositions than its predecessor, Presente.

By Rob Markman

The Bamboozle is back, and music fans are gearing up to hit Asbury Park on the world-famous Jersey Shore to see their favorite acts take the stage during the three-day-long festival.

It all kicks off Friday (May 18) evening, when , Incubus, Mike Posner and Kreayshawn all rock the crowd on a night headlined by electro party-starter Skrillex.

Expect Mac to perform choice cuts from his recently released Macadelic mixtape and for Skrillex to spin dance joints from his Grammy-winning discography.

On Saturday (May 19), Pauly D returns to the Jersey Shore that made him famous to DJ for the crowd. Too bad Deadmau5 isn’t scheduled to appear — the two are currently involved in a back-and-forth beef over Twitter. The Foo Fighters and My Chemical Romance will surely rock the house, and the All-American Rejects will also rip through tracks off their newly released Kids in the Street LP. The great part about Bamboozle is that it brings dozen of acts from multiple musical genres, so if rock isn’t your thing, you can check out rap rookies A$AP Rocky, Iggy Azalea, Action Bronson and Mr. MFN Exquire as they continue to get their first tastes of festival life.

Sunday (May 20) promises to be the homecoming of all homecomings as Jersey boys Bon Jovi headline the evening. Soulja Boy’s buddy Riff Raff, who recently signed a deal with Diplo, is set to entertain the crowd with his off-the-cuff cuts like “Larry Bird” and “Time.”

T. Mills is also scheduled to kick-start his stage show with his new single “Vans On,” and funnyman Andrew Dice Clay will bring a bit of comedy and controversy to the stage. For tickets and additional information, head to the Bamboozle website.

Julio Bashmore Launches Label, Debuts New Track

Julio Bashmore is to launch his own Broadwalk Records label with new track ‘Au Seve’.

Re-igniting Bristol’s love affair with house, Julio Bashmore turned the bass scene on its head. Becoming a deeply influential figure in British dance music, the producer was given his own Radio 1 show earlier this year.

Taking to the air waves earlier this week, Julio Bashmore introduced a new track. ‘Au Seve’ is to be the first release on the producer’s own Broadwalk Records label, given the catalogue number BW001.

Introducing the track, Julio Bashmore supplied the following statement:

Fast cars, money, but no record label to truly call my own? This ends today?
Hi, I?m Julio Bashmore.

Somehow I have found time between jet-setting around the globe, becoming a voice for the people via my Radio One show and generally living the high life to bring you a brand new

Foals Prepare New Mix CD

Comments off

Oxford band Foals have announced the release of a mix CD to be released on July 2nd, along with a string of DJ dates over the summer.

The mix CD is apart of the !K7?s ?Tapes? series which has featured The Big Pink and The Rapture. There seems to be an outcry for nostalgic music formats recently, with sales of vinyl flying through the roof for first time in years – so this classic idea couldn?t come at a better time.

“We wanted it to reflect the taste of the whole band” says keyboard player Edwin Congreave, “so I picked music from the last five years of shared listening. We used to tour in an ex-royal mail delivery van – the DIY band cliché – and we drove ourselves to shows listening to each other’s playlists on a ropey old cassette player.?

With Foals being the inventive types they are, the mix includes an eclectic selection of music such as 90?s math rock, Greek folk music, Kompakt compilations and disco re-edits.

Congreave has spent the last five years deejaying alongside band tours, blending his love of deep house and techno into a populist mould, attempting to build a bridge between the indie disco and the real disco; check out some mixes on his Soundcloud.

Bono to Become World’s Richest Musician After Facebook IPO

Larry Marano, Getty Images

Bono, that guy from U2, is set to become the world’s richest musician in the world when Facebook’s IPO starts trading tomorrow, NME reports. He will overtake Paul McCartney (that guy from the Beatles) and will likely commemorate the occasion with a very heartfelt “Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!”

The Irish singer owns 2.3 percent of the Facebook shares after having purchased them at $90 million in 2009. Now that the company is worth over $100 billion, Bono will be worth more than $1.5 billion. Meanwhile, McCartney is just over worth a measly billion dollars.

Track Of The Day 18/5 – PINS

Comments off

?I kept playing with a lot of boys but it wasn?t for me,? says Faith Holgate impishly. She?s the frontwoman of the much blogged about female four-piece, PINS. Not wanting to be ?the token girl in any boy band,? she recruited the other three. Early gigs have been awash with an amalgamation of reverb, guitar-fuzz, and brazen self-assurance.

?Eleventh Hour? is band?s first official video and an accompanying limited-edition cassette sold out in three hours. ?We?d sold a few to friends and in the end we had to say ?sorry mate but you can?t have one. We need to sell them to actual people,? she laughs. The darkly-textured atmosphere within the track mirrors Faith?s cathartic writing experience. ?I didn?t realise at the time but it reflects on what I was going through. I never realised how therapeutic music could be. The whole theme of the song is about being in a turbulent relationship and questioning your role in life.?

Seeing the final video was another emotional experience, despite the cool image displayed with it Faith confesses: ?It was amazing moment. We all cried. The song was recorded half in our practice room and half in our bass player?s cupboard so to see it all come together was great.?

The video was picked up by lots of bloggers, drawing comparisons to the likes of Crystal Stilts and Dum Dum Girls . Faith herself cites different references. ?I would never have made a band if it wasn?t for the ?90s Riot Grrrl thing because that was what I was into, and we don?t really do it in that style but it?s definitely an influence.?

The girls are have a slot confirmed supporting Best Coast in Wales and tonight they?re playing a New Sounds Of The North gig in a disused office block in their hometown. They?ve come out of the cupboard to use a studio in Wales too. The fruits of these sessions are set to form an EP or split single later in the year.

‘I’m living my PERSONAL life the way I’m happiest,’ actress tweets in response to a tabloid report she is gay.

Raven-Symoné has taken to Twitter to address a National Enquirer report that she is gay. The tabloid published a story this week that the “Sister Act” star is currently dating “America’s Next Top Model” contestant, AzMarie Livingston, and that they are living together in New York City.

According to sources, “Raven has lost almost 30 pounds, has done a whole image makeover, and now she is the star of ‘Sister Act’ on Broadway. She’s at a point now where she doesn’t care what her family thinks, and she’s in love with AzMarie. She’s a lesbian and wants to live that way.”

The tabloid further reports that the 26-year-old’s family does not approve of her lifestyle, however, “she told her parents she loves them, but her home — especially her bedroom — is nobody’s business, and she was not going to back down, so they needed to accept it, period.”

While Raven-Symoné neither confirmed nor denied the speculation on Friday, when she took to Twitter to open up about the rumor, she did make it clear that whatever she does in her personal life is her business.

“I’m living my PERSONAL life the way I’m happiest,” she tweeted. “I’m not one, in my 25 year career to disclose who I’m dating. and I shall not start now. My sexual orientation is mine, and the person I’m datings to know. I’m not one for a public display of my life.”

She continued that “however that is my right as a HUMAN BEing whether straight or gay. To tell or not to tell. As long as I’m not harming anyone. I am a light being made from love. And my career is the only thing I would like to put on display, not my personal life. Kisses!”

RIP Donna Summer ? the accidental gay icon | Paul Flynn

Comments off

Unlike modern stars, Summer never courted a gay audience but her transcendental disco was perfectly in tune with gay culture

Earlier this year rumours began to spread that Donna Summer was in negotiation to take the Sunday headlining spot at the summer music festival, Lovebox. The potential signing was symbolic. Sunday at Lovebox is “gay day”. Donna Summer’s relationship with her fulsome gay fan-base had been fractious ever since there had been rumours of ill-advised comments about the Aids crisis ? comments, it should be said, that she denied ever having made.

In 2012, some 30 years later, the time seemed right for any forgiving or forgetting between the two. The possibility of her doing it to a cherry-picked soundtrack of her unimpeachable back catalogue in an east London park, in front of 10,000+ giddy local homosexuals still in thrall to her talent (if not necessarily her PR technique) felt like redemption.

Like her pop stardom, Summer’s early gay iconography was not something she hankered after. It was something she was presented with. She didn’t craft her ripe talent to a specific audience. It found her on account of it. In a post-Madonna pop universe it seems almost unthinkable that such a thing could happen, but Donna Summer was an accidental icon.

Something about the music she fashioned during disco’s supremacy ? its poise, gravity and open sex content ? touched a mass gay chord at gut level. When Diana Ross sang “I’m Coming Out” or “I Want Muscles” she did it with a sleek wink. She was sensationally market savvy. When Grace Jones recorded an album of growling show tunes to a disco score, its gay intent could not have been more succinct. When Donna Summer breathily intoned her climactic songbook, however, she did it under the tutorship of a hot-blooded heterosexual producer and his faithfully married lyricist in a sterile Munich hit factory. Neither Summer nor Giorgio Moroder nor Pete Belotte were children of the night. They were simply blessed with a divine ability to intuit how 3am under a mirror-ball in a Metropolitan gay nightclub ought to sound, at its most sublime and transcendental. I Feel Love is still it.

Little touches that traced Summer’s career breakout ? Beverley’s campy, chiffon singalong to Love to Love You Baby in Abigail’s Party, the crisp guitar run of Hot Stuff that seemed to ridicule traditional rock posturing, the propulsive refrain “Toot, toot, beep, beep” ? gave her a strange knowing, all the more poignant for not being designed for the gay market it touched hardest.

In the current pop climate, accessing a gay fanbase is seen as the first notch on the bedpost of future success. Just as junior hairdressers were back in Donna Summer’s imperial heyday, aspiring pop singers are now routinely instructed by their handlers that this isn’t the business for them if they have a problem with gay people. All the finest female solo artists of the last decade have been handed a copy of Grace Jones’ One Man Show and the mesmerising 80s Vogue documentary Paris Is Burning on their first day at diva school, both stone-cold gay classics.

Donna’s most obvious modern emotional successor Beyoncé ? a beautiful, shy southern church girl with an uncanny ability to follow the rhythm of music and turn it into an approximation of pure sex ? had to work hard to earn her righteous gay audience, including a spell under a drag-ish alter ego Sasha Fierce and a superb tribute to Summer herself, segueing one of her first hits Naughty Girl into Love to Love You Baby.

The great irony of Donna Summer’s career is that when she left Casablanca records, where she had fashioned peerless gay disco music with the assistance of straight men, she was signed by the most ostentatious gay man in showbusiness, David Geffen. Under this most secular of patrons she returned her most spiritual work. It is almost impossible not to look back at Donna’s incredible commercial and creative peaks as a motivational speech in how to do everything the wrong way round. Yet in this last accidental icon and her topsy turvy career something alchemical happened.

Gay men adored her. We continue to. Any potentially received betrayal that had occurred during her aggressive early 80s “god period” was felt only harder because we cared. Perhaps one aspect of her legacy, quite aside from the sensational music she made, will be this. Understanding gay culture, at its trashiest and most moving, is now required cultural reading for any pop performer with a keen eye on longevity. If it takes a fancy to you, the gay circuit will reward you again and again. None of these pre-fame lessons were at Summer’s disposal. It was the 70s, a time before huge attitudinal shifts in racism, sexism and homophobia. Some little part of the latter probably happened because of her unfortunate fall from the pedestal of gay idolatry. In some peculiarly moving way she actually opened a door. Rest in peace.

“Facebook?s debut is not just a market event. For the millions of Americans who have no intention of ever buying or selling a share of Facebook (although the mutual funds in their 401(k) may have other thoughts), the trading on Friday is the the [sic] equivalent of a must-see Super Bowl Sunday showdown for people who don?t ordinarily watch a football game,” opines the New York Times. Against Me! singer Tom Gabel recently made the stunning announcement that he would transition to living as a woman, a revelation that was met with both support and insults. That brave move got us thinking about other artists who’ve risked their careers — or in some cases, lives — to stand up for something or someone. For some musicians, that risk paid off; for others, it severely damaged their careers. From Madonna and Kanye West to Pearl Jam and Lil B, here are 18 artists who’ve put their careers on the line.

Usher Unveils ‘Nostalgic’ New Song ‘Twisted’

Looking 4 Myself track featuring Pharrell is classic R&B but ‘very relevant,’ superstar says on ‘MTV First.’

Usher sat down for an exclusive “MTV First” interview about his hotly anticipated upcoming release, Looking 4 Myself, his unconventional album-listening experience with the off-Broadway show “Fuerza Bruta” and to give fans a first listen to the Myself track “Twisted” featuring Pharrell. He told MTV News’ Sway Calloway the song is a “nostalgic record” that reflects the album’s ambitious aim to represent the variety of musical experiences that have impacted the R&B superstar.

” ‘Twisted’ is more of a nostalgic record, so when you think about the classic R&B record, we managed a way to modernize it, even though that’s very relevant,” the singer said. “You hear records like Cee Lo, you hear Bruno Mars and also Andre 3000, and that sound is very relevant in this time. So this was kind of our way to tie it all together and give you something different that you probably wouldn’t normally get from me.”

Adapting current sounds and making them his own is a theme Usher is bringing in earnest to Looking 4 Myself and also reflects his philosophy of how to stay in the game. The star released his self-titled debut in 1994, when he was just 16, and has gone on to sell over 65 million records worldwide and score nine #1 songs and six more top 10 hits.

As for how he’s managed to stay on top for so long, Usher revealed that it’s important to never be insular when it comes to music. “Life is a workout, man, it’s like a treadmill, and you gotta be with it, you gotta just stay with it,” he said. “For me, I’ve had the fortunate ability to always be mindful of other things and other people. I’m not so caught up in what I’m doing that I can’t be cognizant of what other people enjoy. … Now, I think music should be used as a channel to really allow people to have different experiences. So, this album is all about bottling up those different experiences.”

The connecting tissue that’s given Usher the ability to explore world music — from full-on dance tracks like his new single “Scream” and his collaboration with David Guetta, “Without You,” to more classic R&B slow jams like “Climax” and the old-school spare drum beat of “Twisted” — while delivering cohesive records has been his voice, which he said brings “the essence of soul and emotion” to each record.

“All of my career is kind of an unveiling, an unfolding story, and it ain’t done. There’s so much more that I’m going to do, so much that I’ve now just been interested in and been introduced to,” he continued. “I just want that experience of having this very monogamous relationship with entertainment and acting in a way where I can really, really focus and become better.”

Usher’s commitment to tackling the changing face of music head-on and forging new roads in entertainment as he matures — he is currently training for a Sugar Ray Leonard biopic — is the key to his success, he said, concluding, “It’s all about evolution for me.”

Zombie Disco Squad –

A few words from Jesse Rose

?Every year I choose one artist to fully get behind on Made To Play. In recent year?s this has seen the likes of Riva Starr and Oliver $ break through and enjoy global success. In 2012 it?s all about Nat Self aka Zombie Disco Squad”.

Over the past months I?ve been working heavily with Nat, AnR?ing this album and will be personally editing a track on every Zombie?s release to come out this year. I?ve put my money on ZDS being THE house artist of 2012.?

High praise, indeed. Zombie Disco Squad’s debut album ‘Brains’ is set to be released on May 28th, an all killer no filler assault on the dancefloor.

The title cut has received the video treatment, fusing its hefty House wollop with animated pieces of pasta. It’s a typically humorous way to treat Zombie Disco Squad – a producer who never seems to take himself too seriously.

Living Off the Land of Freebies from PR People

Comments off

I used to work as an editor for a website. My name was on a masthead with the word “editor” next to it, which immediately made me a target for the exclamation-point-abusive, occasionally-grammatically-correct, word-sending vultures also known as PR people. Back when I was still this editor, one out of every 200 or so PR emails would be of use to me. Maybe I?d get to interview a B-minus-list celebrity or some basketball commentator. Or there?d be a little-known book that actually made sense for us to cover. And then there were products that we?d review in turn for, well, money and other things. The rest, since this was a “men?s website,” was generally a combination of specialized-condom offers, things about porn, things about sex, vaguely applicable things about sports, and the occasional fast food sample.

If you work on the Internet and consider “writing” as part of your “career,” you know all this. I?m no longer an editor for this website, though, so that lowers the ratio of useful-to-me PR emails to something like 0 in Every One. Except, that?s not totally true.

Lady Gaga denied permit for Indonesia concert after religious protests

Comments off

Police refuse to license Jakarta gig, saying they are unable to guarantee singer’s safety following protests

Lady Gaga’s show in Jakarta next month looks certain to be cancelled. The Indonesian authorities have refused to grant a permit for the concert on 3 June, citing security concerns following protests by conservative Muslim groups. “She’s a vulgar singer,” said Salim Alatas, from the Islam Defenders Front. “[She] wears only panties and a bra when she sings and she stated she is the envoy of the devil’s child and that she will spread Satanic teaching.”

Local and national police were unable to guarantee Lady Gaga’s safety, according to Reuters and the Associated Press. The degree of concern is unprecedented: although Indonesian religious groups have protested against western artists in the past, this is the first time police have denied an event permit. “We haven’t done a similar thing before,” a spokesman told the Jakarta Post.

While Indonesia is technically a secular state, it is also home to the world’s largest Muslim population; since 2008, hardliners have successfully campaigned against concerts by Mötley Crüe, N*E*R*D, Rihanna, Akon, 50 Cent and Avenged Sevenfold. At the time of writing, Lady Gaga had yet to issue a statement on the Indonesian government’s decision.

‘American Idol’ Race To Finale: What Should They Sing?

MTV News ‘Idol’ experts share their choices for Jessica Sanchez, Joshua Ledet and Phillips Phillips.
By Gil Kaufman and James Montgomery

Joshua Ledet and Phillip Phillips on “American Idol”
Photo: FOX

The “American Idol” season 11 top three have a lot to prove as we head into Wednesday night’s (May 16) second-to-last lap.

Likely winner Phillip Phillips has skated through virtually unscathed by pretty much doing a season-long homage to Dave Matthews, while Joshua Ledet has thrilled us with his gritty soul shouting but failed to show much personality along the way (unless you count that one week he wore a flower in his lapel). And Jessica Sanchez? Well, the 16-year-old definitely has powerful pipes and is a diva in the waiting, but she’s still not quite ready for prime time.

All three will be tested this week when they have to sing three songs: a judges’ choice, a tune picked by mentor Jimmy Iovine and, finally, one of their own choosing. Though the track record of MTV News’ resident “Idol” experts has been a bit spotty to date (OK, James, we get it, you have gotten it right four more times than Gil), that hasn’t stopped Gil Kaufman and James Montgomery from posting their last set of secret-ballot picks before next week’s finale.

Phillip Phillips
He threw us for a curve last week when he went for Damien Rice’s “Volcano,” and he’s already done a DMB cover, so chances are, Phil will steer clear of anything too obvious. I suspect the judges will pick something firmly in his wheelhouse, though, maybe Counting Crows’ “Mr. Jones.” Iovine has a deep understanding of music and knows that the girls want their hearts melted, so he might opt for something in the classic-rock mode like the Allman Brothers’ “Melissa.” After the Rice-bomb last week, it’s anyone’s guess what P-Phunk will choose, so, what the hell, let’s go with David Gray’s appropriately vanilla 2000 breakthrough smash “Babylon.” — Kaufman

It’s nice of him to take time off from his “Idol” crown fittings (Scotty McCreery was a 7 and three-eighths, BTW) to grace us with his presence this week. I suspect he’ll reward us with more of the same anyway. The judges should just have him do a medley of the past four champs’ singles — including Lee DeWyze’s latest, “Can I Borrow, Like, Five Dollars?” — just to let America realize what they’ve done, but, of course, they won’t. Instead, I’ll say they stick him with one of Steven Tyler’s songs; maybe they have him do “I Don’t Want To Miss a Thing”? As for Iovine’s pick, I’m thinking he gives him Santana and Rob Thomas’ “Smooth,” because Jimmy’s mad old, or maybe John Mayer’s “Your Body Is a Wonderland,” since it will make his female fanbase spontaneously combust. And as for his personal pick? Dude, he’s already gone deep-cut twice (with DMB and Rice), so who’s to say he doesn’t just cover Phish’s “Icarus” and call it a day. Regardless, the judges will praise his “uniqueness.” — Montgomery

Jessica Sanchez
It’s gonna be an uphill battle for JSanch to shimmy her way into the finale. Aside from the curse of near-elimination and the fact that a girl hasn’t won since season six, she’s been somewhat erratic lately and her go-to big ballads have landed as often as her uptempos have flopped. The judges want to see her shine, so they will surely gift her with a big, fat ballad along the lines of Anita Baker’s “Sweet Love.” Jimmy knows she needs to show she can be a contemporary star, which is why he’ll opt for Rihanna’s “California King Bed.” As for what BeBe will pick for herself, well, she’s proven a tough one to nail down. She’s already hit on Whitney, Jennifer Hudson, Beyoncé, Kelly Clarkson and Alicia Keys but has been light on songs by Pink, so I’m gonna suggest “Don’t Let Me Get Me” or “Glitter in the Air,” which will allow her to show her rough and smooth sides. Bottom line: She needs three grand slams to make it to next week. — Kaufman

Six weeks ago, I would have penned an impassioned plea for her to win the season 11 crown. Now? Eh. She’s never really recovered from her (near) elimination, and in her struggles, one glaring weakness keeps rearing its ugly head: Sure, she can sing, but she can’t connect to a song to save her life. Simply put, she’s not ready. In fact, she’s yet to graduate beyond talent-show-standout status. And everyone knows this, which is why I see the judges sticking her with Adele’s “Someone Like You” (since it’s like the de facto emotional song of our times, and if you can’t connect to it then you’re almost assuredly a replicant) and Iovine stuffing something from the Interscope stable down her throat (maybe Fergie’s “Big Girls Don’t Cry” or a Gaga tune). For her own pick? Well, she already did “Dance With My Father,” so maybe she stays in the same vein and does Harry Chapin’s “Cat’s in the Cradle.” Or maybe she’ll just do Beyoncé again. — Montgomery

Joshua Ledet
He may not inspire backflips or have the stagecraft of an Usher or Chris Brown, but Ledet has just the kind of big, showy voice “Idol” viewers love (to vote for just enough to secure second place). The judges can’t get enough of his old-school soul thing, so they’ll go retro with Al Green’s “Take Me to the River.” Jimmy knows Josh has the chops but not the sound radio is looking for, so he has to convince us there’s a record in there somewhere, which means he’ll dip into the Usher vault for something smooth like “Confessions Part II” or “Papers.” Josh has made some odd choices in the past (Josh Groban?) but has shown a proclivity for songs by divas (both male and female), and he hasn’t tried a single tune by Otis Redding yet. Is that possible? In that case, he’s got plenty of options, including “I’ve Got Dreams to Remember,” “These Arms of Mine” or “That’s How Strong My Love Is.” — Kaufman

In a perfect world, he’d win “Idol.” After all, he’s not only the most-talented singer, but the best performer too. But we all know he’s going up against a toothy white guy, so second place is about the best Joshua can hope for. The judges, being the myopic bunch they are, will keep him in the retro-soul box and give him something like Bruno Mars’ “Grenade” (come to think of it, that would be pretty good). Iovine will be trying to keep him current, so why not Usher’s “Climax”? And for his own pick, I have no idea, but if he wants to win, maybe he does fun.’s “We Are Young.” After all, graduation is nearly here, and everyone’s looking for an anthem. — Montgomery

Tall Ships And Johnny Foreigner

The Great Escape 2012

Last year at The Great Escape, the Alcopop!/Big Scary Monsters all-dayer at the less than salubrious Pavillion Tavern ? a pub known for its insanely cheap drinks ? ended in carnage. With a capital CARNAGE. The headliners ? Scottish noiseniks The Xcerts ? and, before them quirky indie-popsters Stagecoach, turned the whole pub into a raucous, ridiculous moshpit ? bodies were flying everywhere, bouncers were throttling people, light bulbs and glasses were smashed, spectacles were dropped and trampled on, the promoter was nearly kicked out of his own gig and a chandelier was pulled off the ceiling and carried out by one supremely cheeky member of the crowd. There?s a video of it on YouTube that?s well worth watching.

It was somewhat surprising, then, that the venue asked the two labels back to curate again this year. That said, the gig achieved such notoriety that they?d have been idiots not to ? it was, truly, the stuff of legends. This year, amid ridiculous drinks offers ? five Jagerbombs for a tenner means nothing is going to end well ? and a host of awesome bands playing throughout the day, it?s up to Johnny Foreigner and headliners Tall Ships to finish the party and reach the ridiculous heights of the previous May.

By the time Johnny Foreigner arrive onstage ? on a stage that?s level with the floor, just a few security guards separating them from the hyperactive and enthusiastic crowd ? the mood of the whole place is ecstatic and ebullient. Sure, partly that?s due to the abundance of inexpensive booze, but it?s as much to do with the band?s playing too. And Johnny Foreigner bring the party vibe up about five notches with their exuberant, quirky and explosive pop. They take to the stage just before midnight and, first serenading the crowd with lullaby-esque poignancy of ?Johnny Foreigner Vs. You? before the blistering, jerkiness of ?Feels Like Summer? tears the contemplative mood of the room in two, while ?Salt, Peppa and Spinderella? is equally exciting and infectious. They finish, breathless and sweaty ? because, by fuck, is it hot in here ? with the triumphant flourish of ?The Swell/Like Neverwhere? ? and deservedly so.

It?s after 1am when Tall Ships begin their set. There?s a huge amount of equipment crammed on the tiny stage, and no room in the crowd whatsoever, but it feels far from claustrophobic. If anything, ?Plate Tectonics? and ?T = 0? infusing the crowd with an otherworldly energy that takes over the room. There?s just three of them, but theirs is a sound that is so complex it seems impossible that there?s not five others hiding behind the amps and the equipment. At the same time, though, it?s music that cuts straight to the heart with a devastating, beautiful simplicity ? and no more so than on this Friday at The Great Escape, in the early hours at the end of a phenomenal, booze-filled and fuelled day. It?s not quite as rowdy as the previous year, but it?s a performance – and, in fact, a whole day ? that reaches the same dizzying heights that Alcopop! and BSM ? and, of course, the bands they chose ? set in 2011. Roll on 2013!

Track Of The Day 16/5 – Sugardaddy

Comments off

The past decade has witnessed a resurgence in naff, a revival of kitsch and a renewal of the unfashionable.

Call it the guilty pleasure, but it now seems to be perfectly OK to admit to a penchant for something out-with the spectrum of cool. Take Groove Armada: once house giants, it seems that the group’s tour bus resonated with breezy West Coast sounds, blue eyed soul and bleached out AOR.

Tom Findlay was recently invited to curate an instalment of Late Night Tales, and responded with a typically personal, idiosyncratic mix. Offering a quote, the producer said: ?it’s very much a ‘concept’ record, blue eyed soul, yacht rock. Vibe was very much tunes that I used to blast on the tour bus. I love that music in a very wrong way, it’s music to hug to!?

In keeping with Late Night Tales tradition, the mix also features a cover recorded exclusively for the release. Tom Findlay and Tim Hutton have hooked up to form Sugardaddy, recording a new version of the Ace classic ‘How Long’.

Clearly having the time of their lives, the new version retains every inch of naff which surrounds Ace. But then, that’s what makes it so appealing – the absence of irony, the straight faced manner of the performance.

Sugardaddy’s version of ‘How Long’ is set to be released on June 18th, with six – count ‘em! – remixes strapped on.

ClashMusic has grabbed an exclusive stream… listen to it now.

Tom Findlay is set to play a special in-store DJ set at Rough Trade East on June 10th, followed by a special launch party at the Big Chill.

What To Expect When You?re Expecting Red Carpet Fashion: Long Vs. Mid-Length Vs. Short Dresses

Comments off

Good to know that one single red carpet can take care of a long-standing premiere dilemma. What length do you wear when attending a film’s red carpet? Do you go full floor-length gown, mid-length or short, cocktail? We suppose it depends on who the star is and the reception of the film, of course, but [...]

Who is actually in Velvet Revolver?

Guitarist denies singer’s claim that he has reunited with Velvet Revolver, saying ‘he’s out of his mind’

Scott Weiland has rejoined Velvet Revolver. Four years after he was sacked as their frontman, Weiland has announced that the musicians “put aside [their] egos” and are recording a new album. The only problem? The other members of Velvet Revolver don’t know anything about it.

“He’s out of his mind,” said Slash, Velvet Revolver’s guitarist, in an interview with 93x. Although it’s true that Weiland played a one-off concert with Velvet Revolver in January, nobody else seems to think it went any further. “I’m on tour all year,” Slash said. “I’ll call [bassist] Duff [McKagan] ? but I seriously doubt it ? We have no intention of going backwards.” McKagan also denied they had reunited with Weiland: “April Fools?” he tweeted. “Oh wait ? Its half-way through May. Nevermind ? #huh?” The group’s other two members, drummer Matt Sorum and guitarist Dave Kushner, have yet to comment.

Whatever the basis of Weiland’s theory about the group reconvening, it seems pretty fleshed-out: “We’ve all grown a lot,” he recently told ABC News Radio. “They gave me a couple of songs, and myself and Dave and Duff are going to be getting together for a songwriting session next week. Slash is going to do some touring then we’re going to do some shows in the later part of summer into early fall.”

Velvet Revolver have been hunting for a new singer since splitting with Weiland in 2008. While Myles Kennedy, the singer with Slash’s band, and Slipknot’s Corey Taylor have been rumoured as possible replacements, the band members been distracted with their other projects ? including Slash, Sorum, and McKagan’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Artist: Megan Reilly
Video: “Throw It Out”
Highlight: “This song was inspired by the break up of two good friends,” Megan Reilly tells Spinner. “And when director Antoine Wagner came to me with the idea of emulating the late French comedian, Fernandel, and having me and my husband wear matching suits I thought it was the perfect visual to a heartbreaking song. It’s not taking itself too seriously but also perfectly identifies the two characters I’m singing about. One trying to change the other, the other trying to break free.”
